According to Express, a man named Yeng observed the object through a telescope on July 3 and saw it flashing red, yellow and blue. Yeng was with friends at a house on Songhu Road, Shanghai when he saw the object. They did not know what the strange object was and described it as hovering among the clouds in the sky, leading to the hypothesis that it was a flying saucer-shaped cloud.
"At first I thought it was a star, but stars are not that big. The object was also not a plane, because it was hovering in the sky, and did not seem to be moving," Yeng said.
Yeng observed the cloud at dawn, around 4 a.m. After the clouds dispersed, the object disappeared. Yeng said the night sky was too dark to get a clearer picture.
Some others suspected the object was just a kite with lights attached, but Yeng said the object was too far away to fly a kite. "We spotted it behind the clouds. It was a very bright object. At first we thought it was a plane, but when we compared it to a nearby building, it wasn't moving. It was very strange," said another witness named Choi.
Many people described the yellow flash as looking like lightning coming from within the clouds, but critics say it is impossible for a natural phenomenon to occur in the same place for several hours at a time.
Scott C Waring, editor of UFO Sightings Daily, a website specializing in unidentified flying objects, said the possibility of Chinese military pilots flying over the city to test flying saucer technology was very low, but there was no evidence to prove this hypothesis.
