Cuong tried drugs many times while participating in catching criminals, became addicted without realizing it and became a dealer of "white death".

On June 8, Luu Duc Cuong (39 years old, from Nghe An) was tried by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City for the crime of illegal drug trafficking.

Cuong said he used to be a 113 Police Officer of Nghe An, participating in arresting drug criminals. During his time working, he tried drugs many times and became addicted without realizing it.

In 2001, while still in the industry, Cuong was found to be possessing drugs for personal use and received a 24-month prison sentence. Shortly after his release, he was arrested again for the same offense. From 2004 to 2011, Cuong was imprisoned twice more.

After serving 2 years in prison, Cuong was found to have AIDS and was temporarily suspended from serving his sentence to seek medical treatment.

In May 2016, after serving his sentence, Cuong went to Saigon to live a vagrant life. One time, he saw a man in a car throw a black nylon bag on the street, so he picked it up. Knowing that there were drugs inside, Cuong took it home and hid it.

A few days later, while looking for a buyer, Cuong was arrested by Binh Thanh District Police, who seized 400 grams of drugs and more than 100 million VND. Cuong claimed that "his parents lent him the money to start a business in Saigon."

"The crime is clear, I don't know what else to say. I just hope the jury will reduce the sentence so that the defendant can return home soon," the former police officer said clearly.

Addicted to drugs along with her husband, Cuong’s wife is also in trouble with the law and is serving a 20-year prison sentence for the same crime in another case. Their 2-year-old child has been sent to the grandparents to be cared for.

Attending the court, Cuong’s father, over 70 years old, sat quietly, occasionally sighing. Having witnessed his son in and out of prison many times, the sadness in his cloudy eyes could not be hidden.

After deliberation, the panel sentenced Cuong to 20 years in prison. At the same time, the court ordered to return 100 million VND to the defendant's parents because there was a basis to determine that this amount belonged to them.
