(Baonghean.vn) - Up to this point, many people still wonder because they don't know how to write correctly.

In a press release sent to the media on November 28, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs of Vietnam have been recognized as “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. However, on the website www.dsvh.gov.vn of the Department of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (VH-TT-DL), in the list of national cultural heritages, this agency calls it “Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs”.

At the international scientific conference “Preserving and Promoting the Value of Folk Songs in Contemporary Society” (the case of Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs) co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the People’s Committees of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces in May, the Organizing Committee also used the term “vi and giam” in scientific documents. This shows that not only many people but also state agencies do not have a consensus on how to call “vi and giam” or “vi and giam”.

Linguistic experts also have different views on “vi, dam/giam”. According to the Vietnamese Dictionary (Hoang Phe, Da Nang Publishing House - Center for Lexicography, 2011), hat dam is “a folk singing style in Nghe Tinh, with a fast rhythm, lyrics based on five-word poems, the last two lines are always repeated in terms of sound and words”, and hat vi is “lyrical antiphonal singing between men and women in labor” (such as vi do dua, vi phuong non, vi phuong vai, vi leo non). “Giam” is understood as a verb, meaning: 1. To weave, patch up a damaged bamboo strip; 2. To add to a blank or missing space to make it complete. According to author Do Thi Kim Lien (Journal of Lexicography and Encyclopedia, No. 2-2012): “It is called vi, giam because every poem contains at least one sentence that repeats the previous sentence between the blank spaces of two stanzas, like giam ma added to the blank space. Poems with few words have only one pair of giams, poems with many words have up to 12 pairs of repetitions.”

Dr. To Ngoc Thanh, Chairman of the Vietnam Folklore Arts Association, said that the way to call it must follow local customs. “I have been working in Nghe Tinh for many years so I understand the people here. The way they use it is “giam”, meaning to add to the blank space, the missing space, but using “dam” becomes a unit of length measurement” - Dr. Thanh said. He also explained that the poetic form of “giam” is that the last line repeats the penultimate line in a similar form, for example: “She gave me one coin/ She told me to buy all kinds of things/ She told me to buy all kinds of things…”

It is known that at the scientific workshop "Preserving and promoting the values of folk songs of Ho, Vi, and Giam of Nghe An" held in Vinh City, Nghe An Province in March 2011, based on many convincing data and arguments, scientists discussed and agreed that after the workshop, the writing style "Giam" will be used in all official documents.

However, perhaps because the use of "vi, mile" is familiar to many people, and this consensus has not been widely announced, "vi, mile" is still commonly used.
