A "mysterious guest" appeared in Russian President Vladimir Putin's car when he visited an Orthodox monastery on Valaam Island, northwest Russia this week.

Images from an officially released video show the Russian leader driving a dark blue Mercedes ML into the monastery courtyard and parking himself.

After getting out of the driver's seat, Mr. Putin went around to the back door of the car. As he opened the door, a red cloth suddenly appeared on the passenger seat and a finger stuck out, pointing towards the president's back.

The images immediately sparked speculation that it could be a "woman in a red dress" being driven by Mr. Putin. Many even humorously suggested that it was Melisandre, the character wearing a red cloak in the movie "Game of Thrones."

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has insisted that the passenger in the back seat was just a member of Putin's security detail. The president just wanted to "get something from the back of the car," he explained.

It appeared to be a coat and the bodyguards in the car signaled that it had been removed. A few seconds later, the Russian leader met with Patriarch Kirill wearing the vest.
