Why shouldn't you drink coffee after drinking?

Many people have the habit of drinking 'dessert' coffee right after chatting with friends. Should we maintain that habit?

Cà phê kết hợp với chất cồn có thể khiến bạn khó ngủ
Coffee combined with alcohol can make it difficult to sleep.

That's not a smart choice, says Dr. Robert Swift, associate director of the Center for Alcohol and Alcoholism at Brown University. Caffeine can trick your brain into thinking you're not drunk (compared to reality), according to Dr. Robert.

When we start drinking, alcohol signals the brain to pump out more dopamine, a neurotransmitter known as the pleasure hormone, according to Men's Health.

Dopamine then triggers the production of a chemical called AMP, which makes your brain more active. And from there, you feel excited and talkative, feeling full of energy.

Once you stop drinking, the sedatives in alcohol begin to wear off. Alcohol causes the release of other neurotransmitters, which begin to slow down brain processes. You start to feel tired, drowsy, and have slow reactions, according to Dr. Robert Swift.

When you drink coffee, the caffeine blocks special enzymes that control AMP. This increases your alertness and reduces the sedative effects of alcohol.

So, even though alcohol slows down your brain, drinking coffee will make you feel more “energized” and less drunk. This may make you want to keep drinking and even drive yourself home.

Caffeine does not reduce the amount of alcohol in your blood, and you will still be drunk, according to Dr. Robert.

In the middle of the night, alcohol will "wake up" your brain's energy, causing you to wake up. Meanwhile, caffeine will make it very difficult for you to fall back asleep. Alcohol and caffeine "work together" to fight your sleep in this way. As a result, you will be very sluggish when you wake up the next morning.

The solution is that you should not drink coffee after drinking alcohol, or you can use decaf coffee (no caffeine), if it is a habit that is difficult to break.

Experts also recommend drinking plenty of water after heavy drinking to compensate for the amount of water lost due to alcohol.
