Why are 'tips for using air conditioning economically' counterproductive?
Many people apply the power saving tip of switching from Cool mode to Dry mode but feel stuffy and not cool enough.
More than a month ago, many internet users shared a simple tip to help save electricity when using air conditioners: Use the remote control to switch the mode from "Cool" to "Dry".
The person who came up with this idea, an Australian woman, said that the room in her house with the air conditioner on Dry mode is always cool, while the power consumption is reduced by up to 10 times. Many others also confirmed that this method is really effective when they apply it.
However, many people said that when they tried this method on the hottest days, they found that the Dry mode was not cool at all, and even caused dryness and discomfort.

Dr. Tran Van Thinh, Department of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, affirmed that using the Dry mode in the air conditioner is actually more energy-saving than using the Cool mode, but the cooling ability is not very effective, especially if the outdoor temperature is too high.
"In Dry mode, the air conditioner will suck moisture out of the room, returning fresher and drier air. This mode consumes less electricity than cooling mode, but it is only effective in places with a temperate climate, not hotter than 36 degrees Celsius and high humidity up to 80-90%," Mr. Thinh explained.
According to him, on hot days with low humidity, using Dry mode does not help reduce the temperature, making the air in the room still hot, and at the same time causing dry skin because the already low humidity is further reduced.
However, switching the air conditioner from Cool mode to Dry mode still has the effect of cooling and saving electricity if your air-conditioned room is closed and has little heat loss. Then, after turning on the air conditioner in Cool mode for a while until the room is cool enough, switching to Dry mode can maintain the coolness for a few hours. If you want to use the air conditioner to save money and cool enough, remember the following tips:
- Do not store below 25 degrees Celsius.
- Use fan with air conditioner.
- Place the condenser in a cool place.
- Arrange closed and insulated rooms.
- Regular air conditioning maintenance.
