On June 20, on National Selfie Day, Hellogiggles quoted many media psychology experts as saying that we should take selfies every day because this action brings many benefits.

Help you assert yourself and love yourself more

A recent body image survey conducted by TODAY and AOL found that 65% of young women said that seeing selfies of themselves made them feel more confident. 40% of teens said that social media allows people to see their best face. 41% of adult women said that taking selfies makes them feel more confident.

“Since the time of the ancient Greeks, humans have used self-study and self-observation to explore their identity and sense of self,” explains Dr. Pamela Rutledge, director of the Center for Media Psychology. “It is an innate human need to try to figure out who and what we are.”

Selfies are also a way to boost self-esteem. “I’ve taken at least one selfie every day since I was 14,” says Molly Soda, a 28-year-old artist. Looking at the photos helps her better understand herself.

You are in control

When you take a selfie, you have control over everything like the position, angle, lighting, and how you present your face. You also have complete control over the image you take.

A recent study found that 2,000 women between the ages of 16 and 25 spent an average of 16 minutes, or about three times a day, taking selfies. Furthermore, the study found that the average person has at least 150 selfies saved on their phone or computer. Whether you decide to post them or keep them private is up to you.

“Catch” memorable moments

Selfies also make it easier for you to capture memorable moments, moments that sometimes only last a few seconds.

Despite these benefits, a recent survey of 508 Facebook users in the UK found that taking too many selfies can have unintended consequences. Sharing too many selfies on social media can damage some relationships.

“Selfies are good or bad depending on how you use them,” says Dr Howard Josie. “If you’re taking selfies to capture great moments of yourself, that’s perfectly fine.”
