Why was March 20 chosen as International Day of Happiness?
Happiness Day is inspired by the idea of Bhutan - a small kingdom deep in the eastern Himalayas, which is considered a country with a high happiness index based on factors such as health, spirit, education, environment, quality of management and living standards of the people.
In June 2012, the United Nations declared March 20 as the International Day of Happiness. 193 member countries (including Vietnam) pledged to support this day through efforts to improve the quality of life, build a fair society, and develop sustainably, in order to bring happiness to people.
Bhutan is a country that has recognized the prestige of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and is famous for implementing the goal of gross national happiness instead of gross domestic product.

The Bhutanese representative said that the need for this Day of Happiness is for all countries and people around the world to take steps to overcome the differences between countries and people around the world and to unite and unite all humanity.
The United Nations chose March 20 as the International Day of Happiness, because this is a special day of the year, when the sun is horizontal to the equator, so on this day the length of day and night is equal - a symbol of balance and harmony of the universe. It is also a symbol of the balance between yin and yang, between light and darkness, between dreams and reality...
Therefore, March 20 - International Day of Happiness also conveys the message that balance and harmony are one of the keys to happiness.
Vietnam is a country with thousands of years of history, so it is no stranger to the goal of happiness. Since the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), “Independence, Freedom, Happiness” has become the national motto.
To continue implementing the goal of developing social security, building prosperous, progressive, happy Vietnamese families and responding to the International Day of Happiness on March 20 launched by the United Nations, on December 26, 2013, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 2589/QD-TTg approving the Project "Organizing activities on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness on March 20 every year".
The project aims to raise awareness of all levels, sectors, organizations, individuals, families, and the whole society about the International Day of Happiness, thereby taking specific and practical actions to build happy families and happy communities of Vietnamese people; enhancing participation and coordination between all levels, sectors, and people of all walks of life, and the cooperation and assistance of domestic and foreign organizations and individuals in activities on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness.
