Why did electricity bills skyrocket?

vnexpress.net April 26, 2019 11:06

The prolonged heatwave, coupled with an 8.36% increase in average electricity prices from March 20th (calculated using a new method), has caused electricity bills for many households to skyrocket.

Electricity bills in April increased by one and a half to two times compared to the previous month, causing frustration among many customers. The electricity sector explained that the reason was the prolonged heatwave, increased electricity consumption by households, and an 8.36% increase in the average electricity price from March 20th...

According to an EVN representative, due to the electricity price adjustment from March 20th, household electricity bills for April will be calculated using an interpolation method, including both the old and new prices based on the actual number of days of electricity usage.

Retail electricity prices for household consumption before and after the adjustment on March 20th:

For example, if a customer consumes 292 kWh in 31 days (billing period from March 13th to April 12th), the number of days using the old electricity price is 7 days; the number of days using the new electricity price is 24 days.

Therefore, the electricity consumption calculated at the old price is: (292 kWh/31 days) * 7 days = 66 kWh. The remaining electricity consumption calculated at the new price is 226 kWh.

The electricity bill, including both the old and new prices, will be calculated based on the actual number of days used, in addition to the actual number of days, according to the tiered electricity pricing system corresponding to the total monthly consumption. For example, with a monthly electricity consumption of 292 kWh, corresponding to the fourth tier of the electricity price system, the electricity consumption at both the old and new prices will be cumulatively calculated up to the fourth tier price.

The portion of production at old prices (before March 20th):

- Level 1: (50 kWh / 31) * 7 days = 11 kWh

- Level 2: (50 kWh / 31) * 7 days = 11 kWh

- Level 3: (100 kWh / 31) * 7 days = 23 kWh

- Level 4: 66 - 11 - 11 - 23 = 21 kWh

Similarly, the electricity consumption of households calculated according to the new unit prices from March 20th is as follows: Tier 1 is 39 kWh; Tier 2 is 39 kWh; Tier 3 is 77 kWh and 71 kWh in Tier 4.
