Why did the young manager quit his job to sell grilled chicken?
When he told his friends that he had decided to quit his government job to become a street vendor, Mr. Hoang was scolded by his friends as "crazy" for giving up a position that "many people wanted but couldn't get".
Regarding the case of Mr. Nguyen Nhu Hoang (former Head of the Department of Science, Technology and Information, Center for Industrial Promotion and Technology Development Consulting, Department of Industry and Trade of Dak Lak) submitting a resignation letter due to the civil servant salary not being enough to live on, Dan Tri reporter met him to ask more about this "unusual" decision.
Friends cursed "are you crazy"
- Why did you share the reason for quitting your civil service job on social media? How did people react to your decision?
- Because my friends often wonder when they see me staying at home without doing anything, so the other day when it was raining and I was bored, I posted it on Facebook.
When they knew I was quitting my job, many people told me that I could work both inside (civil servant – PV) and outside (business – PV), so why should I quit? Many friends even cursed me “are you crazy” when I quit my position as Head of Department – a position that many people aspired to.

- Does your wife agree with your resignation?
- My wife supports this decision because she does business outside and also knows my concerns and thoughts when working for the government. Before, when I was still working, on my free days I helped my wife deliver goods. Now that I have retired, I focus on selling chickens while my wife continues her business.
- How many years have you worked at the Center for Industrial Promotion and Technology Development Consulting, Department of Industry and Trade? When were you promoted to the position of Head of Department?
- I have worked in the industry for 11 years, and in 2013 I was promoted to Head of Science, Technology and Information Department.
- When you asked for leave, how did your colleagues react?
- When I was about to submit my application, my colleagues were also surprised. Those who were close to me encouraged me to “try your best to work”, while those who were not close… were even happier to quit (laughs out loud).
- Was the main reason you quit your job because of the salary or was there any other reason?
- I quit first of all due to economic reasons, specifically because my low income could not ensure my family's life. Besides, there were many other reasons such as in Party cell meetings, government meetings, I often advised the leaders on many things but they were not accepted... when I saw something wrong and kept saying it but it did not work, I quit, to avoid wasting time and having many problems later...

"Work is very free, turn on the air conditioner, turn on the computer and go online..."
- When did you think about quitting your job? What is your daily routine like at work?
- I have been thinking about quitting my job since the beginning of this year, I was very hesitant but then I decided to choose a new direction for my life. In July I submitted my application and then the Department decided to let me quit from August 1st.
As for my job at the office, to be honest with you, I have a lot of free time at work. I turn on the air conditioner, turn on the computer, and surf the internet, which makes me bored. I can't stand someone in their thirties working like an old man!
If I don't do it, I'll go home. Why keep going up there? If my superiors don't agree, I'll have to separate it and let someone else do it. I'm bored sitting in the office, and I'll also take state money, so I really don't like it... It's better to go back to work and earn income for my family.
- Don't you think about working for a private company outside?
- Actually, there are people who have offered to invite me, but honestly, if I can't work as a civil servant, then I'd rather work for the private sector myself.
- Why do you intend to open a grilled chicken restaurant on the sidewalk?
- Because my family lives in Buon Ho town, my youngest brother also raises thousands of chickens in the fields, so I brought them to Buon Ma Thuot city to sell "family chickens". Because these are free-range chickens or also known as "country chickens", I find it convenient to do business and help my family. The fact that I only sell on the sidewalk is suitable for my family's conditions, because investing in a restaurant requires a lot of money but I don't have it, so it's difficult.
- How is your grilled chicken business going?
- I have read the documents and regulations of the Provincial People's Committee about which places in the city allow street vending, so I will do it wherever it is not prohibited. I am currently packing the cart, printing the packaging, logo, etc. and it is almost done. The shop will open soon.
- Do you believe you will succeed in this new field?
- When I do something, I have to have faith. I think that no matter how small it is, it will be better than a government salary and I won't have to worry about many things (laughs out loud).
- Thank you for the chat! Good luck with your choice!
