Wild medicinal herbs in Vietnam are counted by the Japanese to calculate the price.
Physician Vu Quoc Trung, Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association, said that this is both a spice and a medicine that is very good for health.
Perilla is an easy-to-grow plant that even grows wild in rural areas of Vietnam. Its leaves are eaten raw or cooked as a spice for some delicious dishes. In the past, people thought it was just a spice for soup, so they often did not use it.
Nowadays, some people understand the surprising uses of this plant so they have searched for and purchased it. The green perilla leaves are selected with equal size, not torn when exported to Japan, costing 500-700 VND per leaf.
For the Japanese, perilla leaves are an important spice, used to help reduce the fishy smell of fresh seafood in traditional dishes such as sushi and sashimi. In Japanese medicine, perilla leaves are considered a very good herb for health.
