A Russian mining company has unearthed a pink diamond that could be the most expensive gemstone ever.

The 27.85-carat pink diamond was recovered by Alrosa PJSC from an alluvial mine in the northwest of the Yakutia region in Russia's Far East.

According to Alrosa, the pink diamond is of exceptional jewelry quality, with no flaws whatsoever. The diamond measures 22.47 x 15.69 x 10.9mm.

Until this latest diamond was unearthed, Alrosa's largest pink gem ever found weighed just 3.86 carats.

"Alrosa's specialists are currently studying the gem to decide whether to sell it as a rough diamond or cut it into smaller pieces," Evgeny Agureev, head of the ALROSA Sales Organization, said in a press release.

According to Alrosa, we can confirm that this could be the most expensive diamond of all time to be found at Alrosa. Agroev added: "The unique properties of this diamond make it a very valuable gemstone."

Earlier this year, a very large pink diamond, weighing about 59.60 carats, sold at auction in Hong Kong for $71.2 million – the highest price ever paid at auction.
