Hospital fees are pushing 69 million people worldwide into poverty.

On June 12, the World Health Organization and the World Bank stated that medical costs have pushed 6% of low- and middle-income earners into poverty.

According to Dr. Tessa Tan Torres-Edejer, an official from the World Health Organization, this rate means that up to 69 million people fall into poverty after paying for medical expenses.

According to the report, 400 million people worldwide lack access to basic healthcare services. Tim Ebvans, Director of the Health, Nutrition and Population Division at the World Bank, stated that the report serves as a wake-up call regarding the exorbitant cost of healthcare, which drains the wallets of the world's poor, and the fact that the poor still lack access to healthcare, one of the most fundamental human rights.

The report commends the BRICS group of emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (which account for half of the global population)—for their commitment to reforming their healthcare systems to improve the quality of treatment and increase access to medical care.
