Viet Linh brings Nguyen Ngoc Tu's stories to the stage
At 8:00 p.m. on February 16, the play “Fire Island” was performed on the Hong Hac stage (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City). Viet Linh is the scriptwriter. Although the play was based on two short stories “Island” and “Ashes of Glorious Ashes” by Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Viet Linh created a new “framework” for the work, not just a combination of two short stories.

On the 10m2 stage, the two main actors Anh Tho and Dinh Manh Phuc led the audience into 90 minutes of emotional drama. Through monologues and dialogues, the two told the audience the story of a prostitute and a blind man living together on an island. Dinh Manh Phuc transformed into the character Sang - a blind man living alone. Thanks to his ability to predict the weather, Sang helped local fishermen escape. In return, the rescued people sent him a "human gift" to the island, which was a prostitute (Anh Tho).
Two lost souls met in the most ironic circumstances. But overcoming the initial awkwardness, they came together with humanity, respect and love. From Sang's heart, the prostitute decided to tell him the tragedy of her life.
Director Le Thuy is the one who directed the play. Besides the passionate acting of the two main actors, the play also creates emotional effects by using the cinematic technique of slicing and quick scene transitions. The music is performed by Vu Phuc An. The two actors Bao Tri and Huu Thach play the supporting roles of fishermen.
"Fire Island" is considered an experiment of Hong Hac theater when following the main drama genre with a creative narrative, not stereotypically describing life but leaving room for the audience to ponder and immerse themselves in the drama.
Young critic Vu Anh Duong - an audience member of the play "Fire Island" - shared his feelings after enjoying the work: "The two main characters of the play are both isolated people on the island. One is isolated in the profession of selling physical goods. The other is isolated in the darkness of blindness. But the openness of both of them helped them bring a story full of humanity. Audiences coming to the Hong Hac stage not only satisfy their need to see and listen to a work of art, but they also find life, and feel the need to tell the story of their own lives."
