Is Vietnam the country with the most holidays in the world?

In most countries around the world, including fully industrialized countries, the government has clear regulations on the number of vacation days and holidays in a year for workers.

According to the latest announcement, the total number of vacation days and holidays that Vietnamese workers enjoy in 2016 is 34 days. Is this number the highest in the world?

Depending on the level of development, labor productivity and type of work, each country will have different regimes regarding leave days. In most countries, on public holidays as prescribed by the state, employees still receive salary and are usually not counted in the number of annual leave days. In addition, many countries also have other preferential regimes such as parental leave (when the wife gives birth, the husband gets leave) or certified sick leave which are also counted separately.

In Vietnam, except for the maximum 12 days off for a working year, the number of days off for holidays in Vietnam is regulated by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs as follows: New Year's Day January 1: 1 day, Lunar New Year: 5 days, Victory Day April 30: 1 day, International Labor Day May 1: 1 day, National Day September 2: 1 day, Hung King's death anniversary March 10 of the lunar calendar: 1 day, a total of 10 days.

However, because these occasions coincide with holidays or are close to holidays, the holiday will usually last longer. Specifically, the total number of holidays and Tet in 2016 is: New Year's Day is 3 days off, Lunar New Year is 9 days off, Hung King's Commemoration Day is 3 days off, April 30 and May 1 are 4 days off, National Day September 2 is 3 days off, a total of 22 days.

Thus, if the number of annual leave days is added together, Vietnamese workers can have a maximum of 22 days off per year (for those with long-term labor contracts or one year or more, not including part-time workers, seasonal workers or short-term contracts).

Vietnam is a country with an average number of holidays in Southeast Asia and less than in European countries.

In Australia,For each year of work, workers are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation, and if they work shifts, they can take up to 5 weeks of vacation. In addition, all workers are entitled to 10 to 13 days of public holidays each year, depending on the state and territory. Thus, Australian workers can take a minimum of 30 days of vacation each year, almost equivalent to the maximum in Vietnam. Below are some countries listed in the list of minimum number of public holidays and vacations of countries under the 5-day/week work regime compiled by Wikipedia:

Among the countries in the world, Europe is perhaps the region with the most “friendly” labor regime, wages and working conditions. In the European Union, according to regulations, all member countries must allow their employees to have a minimum of 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation.

For example in France, the minimum number of days off is 5 weeks (30 days including Saturday, Sunday is not counted as a day off), plus 22 days according to the regulation of reduced working hours for workers who choose to work more than 35 hours/week. The maximum number of working hours per week for French workers is 39 hours, if they are forced to work more, they will be compensated in cash.

In addition, if workers choose to take vacation outside of the summer, they will be “bonused”, for example, asking for 3 days of vacation outside of the summer will be added 1 day, asking for 6 days of vacation will be added 2 days. Adding all the above regulations, French workers can take up to 9.5 weeks of vacation (5 weeks of vacation plus 4 weeks of overtime and 0.5 weeks of bonus). Not only that, France also has 11 official holidays.

As for France's "neighbors",Germany, a developed industrial country, the number of vacation days is 24 working days (defined as all calendar days, excluding Sundays and public holidays). Germany has one public holiday, the Day of German Reunification. Otherwise, the states will adjust the number of their own state holidays between 9 and 13 days. Civil servants have a minimum of 30 days vacation.

Another European country isHungaryalso has very special regulationson the number of days off. On average, a Hungarian worker gets a minimum of 20 days off per year, and this number increases depending on age. In addition, workers get 2 extra days off if they have one child, 4 days if they have 2 children, and 7 days if they have more than two children. In addition, Hungarians get 13 more official holidays.

In short, for countriesEurope, a place considered a "paradise" of labor, harmoniously combining work and rest, workers can enjoy a minimum of 30 to 40 days of leave to regenerate their labor, so the number of 22 days in Vietnam is still quite "modest".

So what about the countries right next to Vietnam like?China, Thailand, Cambodiaso what?

For China, a country with a “huge” number of workers and a rapidly growing industry, workers will be given different number of days off depending on the time they have worked. Those who have worked from 1 to 10 years will get 5 days off; 10 days for workers who have worked from 10 to 20 years and 15 days for those with more than 20 years of seniority. In addition, all workers are given 11 public holidays.

In the country next to Vietnam isCambodia, all employees are entitled to an average of 1.5 working days off per month for long-term contracts. However, the number of days off will increase gradually according to seniority, with an average of 1 day added every 3 years. In addition, all employees are entitled to up to 27 public holidays.

For tourist countriesThailand,Employees in the first year of employment will be entitled to a minimum of 6 days of annual leave. In subsequent years, companies can adjust the annual leave beyond 6 days. Thailand has a total of 13 official public holidays according to state regulations.

Meanwhile,Malaysiatake 8 days offfor workers in the first 2 years of employment, then increased to 12 days for those working from 2 to 5 years and 16 days for those with more than 5 years of seniority. In addition, workers are also entitled to 19 public holidays.

It can be concluded that, if compared in the Southeast Asia region in particular, specifically Cambodia with a minimum total number of days off of 45 days, Thailand with 18 days and Malaysia with 30 days, the number ranging from 22 to 34 days off of Vietnam is at an average level.
