Vietnam wins first prize for photos on forests and climate change.
Works from Vietnam and Malaysia won the top prizes in the ASEAN community photography competition on environmental protection and climate change.
Last night (February 20th), the awards ceremony for the 2013 ASEAN Community Photo and Documentary Film Festival on Environmental Protection and Climate Change took place.
This inaugural festival, themed "Environmental Protection and Climate Change in the ASEAN Community," was launched on July 17, 2013. After more than five months, the Organizing Committee received 536 photographic works and photo series, and 125 documentary and news reports submitted by photographers, journalists, filmmakers, and other participants from ASEAN member countries.
According to the judges, the entries in this competition all possessed good artistic quality and rich informational content, diverse themes, and varied styles of expression. Some authors showed creativity and innovation, offering viewers works of significant artistic value.
A special feature of this year's festival is that the entries not only showcase and reflect on environmental protection and climate change mitigation in their respective countries, but also many works use them to introduce and promote ASEAN member countries. For example, images of Malaysia are presented through the eyes of filmmakers and photographers from Myanmar, while images of Laos and its people are recreated through the eyes of Vietnamese filmmakers…
The Chairman of the Festival, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Bac Son, stated that although the Festival's theme was about environmental protection and climate change in ASEAN countries, a unique issue, its first-ever organization was a great success, meeting the requirements and objectives of the Festival. The Festival demonstrated a spirit of solidarity and cooperation for mutual development, not only in the fields of diplomacy and economics but also clearly in the fields of culture and media.
As a result, 22 documentary films and 21 photographs made it to the final round, and the organizing committee awarded prizes to 14 documentary films and 14 photographs.
The First Prize for Photography went to the photo series "The Role of Forests and Climate Change" by Huynh Lam from Ca Mau, Vietnam. The First Prize for Documentary Film went to the film "Green Dance" by the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia.
The author of the photo series "The Role of Forests and Climate Change," Huynh Lam, said that he took these photos from 2007 to 2013 in "Forest Village," Nam Can district, east of Ca Mau Cape. In 2007, rising sea levels flooded more than 200 houses in the village. Seeing lives threatened by this natural disaster, he decided to create a photo series about that "Forest Village." The destruction of forests has contributed to climate change.
Author Huynh Lam also shared that deforestation at Ca Mau Cape, like deforestation in national parks in general, has been occurring day and night, while the forest protection force is still thin.
In addition, the Organizing Committee awarded 4 Second Prizes (2 for Documentary and Reportage Films and 2 for Photography), 6 Third Prizes (3 for Documentary and Reportage Films and 3 for Photography), and 10 Consolation Prizes (5 for Documentary and Reportage Films and 5 for Photography).
