Vietnam is among the last two locations considered for the Trump-Kim meeting.
Vietnam appears to be one of the two final locations being considered as the venue for the second US-North Korea summit between President Donald Trump and leader Kim Jong-un in the near future.
On January 10, the Korean Herald newspaper quoted an anonymous official of the South Korean Foreign Ministry as saying:
"The locations you should pay attention to are the ones mentioned by the media, including Vietnam, Singapore and Hawaii. However, Hawaii is considered an unfeasible location because there is no North Korean embassy here."
North Korea has embassies in Vietnam and Singapore, so it can rely on diplomatic teams there to prepare for the second summit between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim Jong-un.
Singapore was where the first US-North Korea summit took place last June.
Meanwhile, the geographical distance between Vietnam and North Korea is said to be suitable for leader Kim Jong-un's Chammae-1 plane.
This is a type of aircraft that can fly 7,000km. This is also consistent with President Trump's comment that the summit will be held at a location within the aircraft's permitted operating range.
The location of the second summit between President Trump and leader Kim Jong-un is attracting considerable attention, especially after South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the meeting will take place soon. For his part, President Trump said that the US is "negotiating the location" and will announce it in the near future. He also hopes that the meeting will take place in January or February this year.
