Test successful

This information was mentioned by Colonel Vu Ngoc Hoang, Deputy Political Commissar of Division 377, in the article "Some solutions to strengthen discipline training at Air Defense Division 377".

"Training, live-fire testing, acceptance and deployment of the Spyder missile system; hosting and participating in the C125M missile combat team exercise organized by the Air Defense - Air Force Service won First Prize; all units participating in the live-fire anti-aircraft artillery exercise achieved Excellent results," Colonel Vu Ngoc Hoang said about the tasks completed in 2016.

Although Vietnam successfully tested the Spyder system, the source did not provide the specific location and time of this test. In the "World Arms Transfers" recently published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Vietnam ordered 5 Spyder-MR medium-range air defense missile systems under a contract signed in 2015, currently only 1 system has been transferred to Vietnam.

According to the manufacturer's introduction, the Spyder complex is designed to serve the organization of air defense operations using the central network combat method, operating in all weather conditions, with high self-propelled mobility, fast combat level transition and the ability to aim at multiple targets at the same time.

The complex is capable of destroying all types of flying targets including fighter jets, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles and other remotely-launched controlled bombs and munitions in a strong electronic suppression environment...

Not only purchasing and operating it proficiently, Vietnam has also successfully produced components of the Spyder system. According to the Air Defense newspaper, on July 25, 2016, the Air Defense - Air Force Service conducted acceptance testing of the VN1 interrogator (MH-VN1) used on the Spyder air defense missile system.

Through actual inspection, the Acceptance Council unanimously assessed that MH-VN1 products ensure full equipment, are newly manufactured with highly reliable components, apply new technologies, fully meet approved technical and tactical parameters, and are qualified for installation and pairing for use on the Spyder air defense missile system.

The successful manufacture of MH-VN1 products has affirmed the capacity and intelligence of the staff of the Air Defense - Air Force Technical Institute in researching, designing and manufacturing new products to serve the missions of the Air Defense - Air Force Service and the Army, meeting the requirements of the missions in the new situation.

Vietnam's acceptance of the MH-VN1 system is of special significance because it is one of the important components of the Spyder air defense missile system, as it is an air-to-air identification device to distinguish between friend and foe, ensuring that no wrong target is shot during combat.

Spyder Vietnam in foreign newspapers

After the news of Vietnam purchasing the Spyder air defense system was confirmed, foreign media had different opinions about this event. According to Army Recognition, Vietnam has officially chosen the Spyder air defense missile system made by Israel instead of an air defense system from Russia as before to strengthen its air defense system.

This newspaper believes that Israel's Spyder medium-range air defense missile system, Russia's S-300PMU-1 long-range air defense missile system and the 36D6 low-altitude radar system will be the backbone of Vietnam's air defense force in the future.

In addition, Vietnam's public announcement of its purchase of the Spyder air defense system has also attracted special attention from the Russian media. Specifically, the military-informant website claimed that Russia's Pantsir-S1 air defense system was defeated by Israel's Spyder in the race in Vietnam.

According to this source, in recent times, the Vietnamese armed forces have gradually invested in purchasing new and modern weapons and equipment to enhance air defense capabilities such as the ELM-2288 radar system, the 36D6 radar system, the Kolchuga passive radar, and the Spyder and S-300PMU1 air defense missile systems.
