From June 26-29, a delegation of Vietnamese inter-ministerial officials, led by Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defence and Head of the Ministry of National Defence's Steering Committee on participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, visited the UN peacekeeping agency and several other functional agencies at the organization's headquarters in New York, USA, to prepare for Vietnam's participation in the United Nations peacekeeping force.

Speaking at the reception for Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Edmon Mulet, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations in charge of peacekeeping operations, welcomed Vietnam's sharing of responsibility with the international community and its readiness to participate in the United Nations peacekeeping force.

He stated that maintaining peace and stability on Earth is the ultimate and overarching goal enshrined in the United Nations Charter, and that the ultimate goal is achieved by none other than the 193 member states of this largest multilateral organization on the planet.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Mulet provided a detailed overview of the organization, structure, and operations of the United Nations peacekeeping agency, as well as several peacekeeping missions currently deployed in various countries to prevent conflict, isolate warring parties, or rebuild conflict zones.

He expressed his belief that a peace-loving nation like Vietnam, which has endured many sacrifices and hardships and fought bravely and tenaciously for peace, will surely bring valuable experience to the United Nations peacekeeping forces regarding the protection of common peace for humanity.

General Nguyen Chi Vinh sincerely thanked the United Nations for its positive assessments of Vietnam's role in peacekeeping, as well as for the UN's full trust in Vietnam in this noble mission.

The General emphasized that this is an honor and responsibility for a member state of the United Nations and affirmed that, as an active, proactive, and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam will do its best to fully prepare all conditions, including legal procedures, to soon send soldiers to participate in medical, engineering, and staff officer units of the peacekeeping force.

Before arriving in New York, the Vietnamese inter-agency delegation surveyed the operations of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, learning about the practical experiences of military units from various countries carrying out peacekeeping and reconstruction missions in South Sudan.

Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, participated in all activities of the delegation.
