Vietnam attends the 86th Interpol General Assembly

On September 26, the opening session of the 86th Interpol General Assembly took place at the National Convention Center in Beijing with the participation of senior leaders representing police and law enforcement forces of 158 countries and regions.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of Public Security, attending the meeting.

After the opening speech of the session by Interpol President Meng Hongwei and Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a welcome speech to the Conference, emphasizing the importance of strengthening global cooperation between police forces of countries through the Interpol cooperation channel, in the fight against transnational crime, especially in the context of the complicated world situation, with consecutive terrorist attacks in many countries, posing great security and safety risks to all countries and regions.

Starting in 2015, along with the innovation initiative “Interpol Agenda 2020,” the Interpol leadership identified priority areas including counter-terrorism, high-tech crime, organized crime and emerging crimes (such as human trafficking, drug crimes, etc.).

Interpol also set out eight main action objectives, including: Supporting capacity building for national police; Enhancing the effectiveness of the Command Center at the Secretariat; Enhancing the role of coordinating activities between Interpol member countries; Promoting support for member countries' police in investigating crimes; Enhancing the effectiveness of arresting internationally wanted criminals; Developing crime prevention and control programs and campaigns; Enhancing the effectiveness of crime information analysis; and Enhancing support for criminal forensics, and supporting the development and management of police databases.

At its 86th session, the Interpol General Assembly devoted its first full day to reviewing the global security landscape and discussing new perspectives and ideas for global security goals, with a view to strengthening cooperation between police forces and private sector partners on security issues, particularly in police data connectivity.

Interpol member countries also delved into analyzing the challenges and difficulties posed by emerging and emerging crimes and terrorism, cybercrime, organized crime in the world, thereby proposing effective solutions to combat them.

The General Assembly also discussed and agreed on Interpol's financial plan from now until 2020 in the direction of openness, transparency, savings, efficiency and budget balance. Along with that, the General Assembly summarized and evaluated the results of cooperation in preventing and combating dangerous crimes and the implementation of priority goals in 2017, discussed and proposed directions for activities in 2018.

During the three-day session, the General Assembly will consider applications for membership from three countries and territories, including the Solomon Islands, Palestine and Kosovo. Delegates attending the session will discuss and adopt 19 resolutions on issues of cooperation in preventing and combating transnational crime through Interpol.

In addition, the General Assembly will elect 1 Vice President and 4 members of the Standing Executive Board whose term ends in 2017.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Vietnamese delegation will have working meetings with the Secretary General and President of Interpol as well as representatives of other member countries to further strengthen the good partnership between the two sides, seek support from Interpol and coordination from other countries in Vietnam's fight against crime./.
