Vietnam wins big on opening day of Southeast Asian Athletics Championship
On the evening of June 7, the 2013 Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championship officially opened at Thong Nhat Stadium (Ho Chi Minh City) with the participation of nearly 300 team leaders and athletes from 7 countries in the region.
As of 9:30 p.m. on June 7, the host Vietnamese athletes have won 13 gold medals.
On June 7, athletes competed in 45 events. Vietnamese athletes performed quite well, with notable achievements such as Nguyen Thi Hoai Nhi's high jump (1m70), Bui Thi Trang's javelin throw of 43m31, Nguyen Thi Hang's 400m hurdles (under 21 age group)...

In this tournament, the key athletes of the Vietnamese team preparing for the upcoming Asian Youth Championship in Nanjing (China) also competed excellently, such as the gold medal of Bui Thi Nang Bac in the women's 800m event, the silver medal in the same event of Tran Thi Tham. The hope Nguyen Thi Oanh also excellently won the gold medal in the 400m event.
This is an annual tournament for young athletes in the region to compete and improve their skills. This year's tournament brings together 7 participating countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore.
The two largest delegations are Vietnam and Thailand. Athletes will compete for 60 sets of medals in two age groups: under 18 and under 21.
