According to the report, 38 countries have achieved these goals, including halving the rate of poverty and hunger by 2015. Vietnam, in particular, achieved the goal of reducing the number of people suffering from food insecurity by 50% during the periods 1990-1992 and 2010-2012.
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva praised the success of these countries, affirming that with this success, they are moving towards a better future. According to him, this success is a testament to strong political will and close coordination in poverty eradication policies; and all of this has been demonstrated by the rapid and sustainable reduction in hunger achieved by these countries.
Director-General Da Silva also stated that on June 16th, the FAO will hold a ceremony in Rome, Italy, to honor these 38 countries. He urged these nations to continue their progress towards completely eradicating poverty under the "Zero Hunger Challenge" initiative, first launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Sustainable Development Conference in Brazil in June 2012.
According to FAO statistics, although the number of people living in poverty globally has decreased over the past decade, 870 million people still suffer from food insecurity, and millions more lack vitamins and minerals, including many children. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) call on countries to reduce the proportion of people earning less than $1.25 a day and to increase employment opportunities for low-income earners.
