"We are confident in our ability to organize such events after the success of APEC 2017 in Da Nang," Le Thi Thu Hang, spokeswoman for the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said today in response to an AFP reporter's question about the possibility of US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un having a second summit in Vietnam.
Ms. Hang said the time and location of the second Trump-Kim summit will be decided by both sides. Vietnam "does not yet have this information" but is ready to actively contribute to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.
The APEC 2017 Conference held in Da Nang city left a good impression on the country and people of Vietnam and was highly appreciated by international friends for its ability to organize international-scale events.
The White House said on January 18 that the second Trump-Kim summit will be held at the end of February. The US President later announced that the two countries had chosen a country to host the meeting but "will announce it later".
News agencyCNNEarlier, a source familiar with the matter said that the White House advance team had traveled to Hanoi, Bangkok and Hawaii to survey locations for the second summit between the two leaders.
The first summit between the US President and the North Korean leader took place in June last year in Singapore. After the meeting, the two countries agreed to work towards the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but this effort has not made much progress because each side has a different understanding of the concept of denuclearization.
