The number of 21,400 students studying in the US has brought Vietnam to 6th place among the leading countries of international students studying in the US, compared to 9th place in 2015.

The Open Doors 2016 report on international educational exchange released yesterday (November 15) shows that, with a growth rate of 14.3% compared to 2015, Vietnam continues to maintain its growth momentum in the number of international students studying in the US over the past decade.

Vietnamese students in the US mainly attend universities. In the 2015-2016 school year, 67.2% of Vietnamese students attended undergraduate schools, 15.1% attended graduate schools, 7.8% participated in optional practical training (OPT), and 9.9% studied non-degree programs such as English or short-term study.

"International students act as cultural ambassadors, helping Americans understand more about Vietnamese people. When they return to Vietnam, they help people understand more about the US. In addition, international students can use the knowledge they have acquired in the US to build a more prosperous Vietnam," said US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius.

In the 2015-2016 academic year, the number of international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities surpassed the one million mark for the first time, up 7 percent from the previous year to nearly 1,044,000 (5 percent of all students in the U.S.). The U.S. hosts the largest number of international students, of the 4.5 million students studying abroad worldwide, double the number of international students in the U.K., the second-ranked country.

The Open Doors report is published annually by the Institute of International Education in cooperation with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, US Department of State./.
