Mr. and Mrs. Luan distributed 1,000 packets of sticky rice to flood victims.

(Baonghean) –In the early days of the recent heavy rains, almost all hamlets in Hung Yen Bac and Hung Yen Nam communes of Nghi Loc district (Nghe An province) were flooded and cut off; Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Van Luan (born in 1960, residing in Hamlet 1, Hung Yen Bac commune) voluntarily used 300 kg of glutinous rice from their family to cook sticky rice and deliver it to flooded families to alleviate hunger.

Thanks to Mr. Luan's house being located on high ground, having a spacious yard and a roof, it wasn't flooded. Even though it was raining heavily, many neighbors came to help the couple cook sticky rice in their yard. Some relatives, knowing that Mr. Luan and his wife were doing a good deed, also contributed dry firewood for cooking or brought peanuts to roast with the sticky rice.

All 7-8 pots of sticky rice (cooked in borrowed military-grade pots from neighbors) were steamed until cooked, then divided into about 1,000 packets. Mr. and Mrs. Luan asked some relatives and acquaintances to use small boats to deliver the packets to families affected by the flooding. However, because so many people needed the sticky rice, Mrs. Luan later transferred the packets to the parish church and used a loudspeaker to announce that people from each neighborhood should come and receive and distribute them to the families.

According to Mr. Luan, on one trip while he was distributing sticky rice to the villagers, his small boat capsized, and several dozen packages of sticky rice were swept away, but luckily no one was injured.

The timely actions of Mr. and Mrs. Luan were truly touching and noble.
