Many people in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City were surprised to see former President Truong Tan Sang and his wife happily eating a 2,000 VND meal with the poor at the Nu Cuoi restaurant.
At noon on September 18, former President Truong Tan Sang and his wife quietly stopped their car a long distance away and walked to the Nu Cuoi restaurant on Cong Quynh Street (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City).

Approaching an old man who was eating, the former President kindly asked: "Are you full? Why isn't the food finished?" The old man replied: "No, I'm still waiting for more rice. Here, rice is served freely and costs only 2,000 VND."
Hearing that, the former President smiled friendly and continued to ask about the two students who were also eating here.

After visiting the diners, the former President went down to the kitchen to check and encourage the staff serving 500 meals here every day.

When he heard the female chef who was serving said that she worked full-time at the restaurant with a salary of 3 million, and did not work extra at another place, he was surprised: "How can a monthly salary of 3 million be enough to live on?"

Seeing many people around him surprised, the former President said: “Is it strange to see me here? There is nothing strange about it. You should ask the people here to know more about your feelings, I cannot speak for them. On this occasion, I just hope that instead of wasting money, everyone comes here to contribute a little effort to help the poor, which will be more meaningful.”
Also this afternoon, District 1 Vice Chairman Doan Ngoc Hai also lined up to eat a 2,000 VND meal with the people.

Mr. Hai said this was the first time he visited Nu Cuoi restaurant.
“I have been so busy with work lately that I have not had time to come to the restaurant. I find the restaurant’s activities very meaningful. In the near future, I will try to come here with the generous donors and businesses that support the restaurant,” he shared.
After finishing their meal, former President Truong Tan Sang and his wife donated 50 million VND to Nu Cuoi restaurant.
Mr. Doan Ngoc Hai donated 20 million VND, hoping that the restaurant will continue to provide more meals for the poor.
Journalist Nam Dong, former editor-in-chief of Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper and head of the Nu Cuoi social rice restaurant chain, said that the restaurant on Cong Quynh Street serves 500 meals a day from Monday to Saturday for only 2,000 VND.
