Despite her husband being in prison, Loan followed in his footsteps, transporting drugs. This woman has paid the price for her disregard for the law.

The Nghe An Provincial People's Court recently held a first-instance trial to hear the case against defendant Nguyen Thi Phuong Loan (born in 1993), residing in Hung Dung ward, Vinh City, for the crime of "illegally transporting narcotics".

Loan's husband, Le TL, is currently serving a prison sentence related to drug offenses at a prison in Ba Ria Vung Tau province. On April 4, 2024, a man named Trung (an acquaintance of Loan's husband) contacted Loan, hiring her to transport drugs from Hanoi to Vinh for a fee of 20 million VND.

Hearing this, Loan agreed and invited a friend to go to Hanoi with her, but didn't reveal the purpose of transporting drugs. At 11 PM that same day, Loan took her mother's car and went to Hanoi with her friend.

The following morning, upon arriving in Hanoi, Loan contacted Trung alone to receive the drugs. After obtaining the "goods," Loan loaded them into a car. To avoid detection by authorities, she deleted all call history, text messages, and Trung's Zalo contact from her phone.

Later that same day, Loan returned to Nghe An with the drugs. She was arrested by the police at the Bac Vinh Bus Station (in Nghi Kim commune, Vinh City). The evidence seized in the case was 434 grams of drugs.

At the trial, the defendant admitted to transporting drugs from Hanoi to Nghe An for hire. The defendant justified his actions by claiming he committed the crime to earn money to care for his two children.

The female defendant stated that her husband is currently serving a prison sentence, so she understands the legal regulations regarding drug-related offenses. However, driven by greed, she still committed the crime.

The defendant cited difficult circumstances and young children as reasons for requesting the court to consider mitigating circumstances and reduce the sentence.

The court determined that the defendant's actions violated the law, and that drugs are the root cause of all other crimes, therefore a strict punishment is necessary. However, some mitigating circumstances such as honest confession and remorse should also be considered.

After a comprehensive review of the case, the court sentenced Nguyen Thi Phuong Loan to 20 years in prison for "illegally transporting narcotics".
