A plant rich in medicinal properties.
In Vietnam, the leaves, buds, bark, and roots of the Vối tree (Syzygium jambos) have long been used by people to make tea for refreshment. Vối leaves are believed to strengthen the spleen, improve appetite, and aid digestion. The bitter and astringent substances in Vối stimulate the secretion of digestive juices, the tannins protect the intestinal mucosa, and the essential oil of Vối has antibacterial properties but, importantly, does not harm beneficial bacteria in the gut.
According to research by Professor Do Tat Loi, the leaves and buds of the Vối plant contain plant-based antibiotics that kill many disease-causing bacteria, including Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. According to traditional medicine, Vối has a slightly astringent taste, a cooling nature, is non-toxic, and has the effects of clearing heat, relieving external symptoms, eliminating stagnation, and killing bacteria. Folk medicine often uses the leaves, bark, stem, and flowers to treat bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, boils, chronic colitis, and bacillary dysentery.
Research from the Institute of Traditional Medicine shows that the buds and leaves of the Vối plant have antibiotic effects against many types of bacteria such as Gram+, Gram-, Streptococus (hemolytic and staman), diphtheria bacteria, Staphylococcus, Pneumcoccus, pneumococcus, Salmonella, Bacillus subtilis, etc., and are not harmful to the body.
The Vối plant (Syzygium jambos) has very high medicinal potential. Numerous studies on the medicinal properties of the Vối plant over the years have shown that the active ingredient in its buds is a polyphenol compound called 2',4'-dihydroxy-6'-methoxy-3',5'dimethylchalcone. It is this substance that produces a reversible effect on multidrug-resistant cancer cells.
Buds of the Syzygium jambos plant help treat diabetes.
One notable study is the effect of the buds of the Syzygium jambos plant in supporting treatment.diabetesExperimental and clinical research conducted jointly by the National Institute of Nutrition (Vietnam) and Japan Women's University has demonstrated that flavonoid compounds in the buds of the Syzygium jambos plant are highly effective in supporting the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Regular consumption of Syzygium jambos bud tea helps stabilize blood sugar, reduce blood lipids, fight cellular oxidation, protect against damage to pancreatic beta cells, prevent cataracts, and increase basal metabolism. Importantly, drinking Syzygium jambos bud tea has no significant side effects, making it suitable for regular consumption.
Due to the diverse and effective medicinal uses of the Vối flower bud, manufacturers now offer many products such as Vối flower bud tea bags, Vối flower bud extract, etc. The price of Vối flower buds is also not high, around 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, and they are sold in many northern provinces. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vối flower buds can also be purchased in many places, most notably on Pham Van Hai Street (Tan Binh District), a place that sells Northern specialties.
