On May 9, Vietnam Cable Television (VTVcab) issued a statement saying that they officially stopped broadcasting the Champions League and Europa League tournaments in Vietnam starting with the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals taking place in the early morning of May 10.

The reason is that the television copyright of the two tournaments has been blatantly stolen by many organizations and individuals, and broadcasted widely throughout Vietnam. Therefore, the tournament copyright provider for VTVcab, KJ Investment Group Inc (Korea), has stopped providing signals.

This is the second time VTVcab has had its signal cut off by its partner when the Champions League season is entering its final matches due to copyright infringement. Previously, on March 10, 2016, KJ also cut off the signal of the 2015-2016 Champions League season when the tournament was reaching its climax.

In a press release sent to the media and its customers, VTVcab said: “On August 27, 2015, VTVcab announced the broadcasting rights for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and UEFA Europa League (UEL) football tournaments for the 3 seasons 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018. This is considered a welcome and important signal, because through the services of VTVcab and VTV3HD, Vietnamese audiences can fully enjoy these top football tournaments in a completely legal manner.

However, after many efforts to cooperate and ensure copyright issues throughout the seasons, VTVcab has once again been forced to stop broadcasting the UCL and UEL tournaments on VTVcab and VTV television services in Vietnam... For this unfortunate incident, VTVcab has the responsibility to send its most sincere apologies to television viewers, customers using VTVcab services, and football fans.

Serious copyright infringement

In its press release, VTVcab said that many units owning electronic news sites have blatantly violated copyright, posting clips edited from matches of the two football tournaments above; television units illegally broadcast Champions League and Europa League matches.

The press release reads: "In the face of the above situation, VTVcab has also petitioned the Ministry of Information and Communications, C50 - Ministry of Public Security, Department of Information and Communications Security - Ministry of Public Security, and at the same time carried out the necessary procedures to sue websites that intentionally violate copyright. VTVcab has made great efforts, by all means, in order to protect the copyright of television programs to continue broadcasting these tournaments to serve audiences and fans. However, the copyright infringement of the broadcast of the two tournaments continues in many forms, despite warnings from VTVcab, the copyright provider and the authorities. These units even use many sophisticated methods to oppose VTVcab's protection measures.

Therefore, the copyright provider of the Champions League and Europa League broadcast programs has announced to stop providing signals, requiring VTVcab to stop transmitting, broadcasting, promoting, and distributing Champions League and Europa League programs. Because protecting the copyright of Champions League and Europa League in Vietnam is one of the important conditions for VTVcab to own the copyright to broadcast the world's leading tournaments.
