A horrible afternoon in Nghia Xuan
Perhaps for the rest of his life, Mr. Pham Van Thanh in Lien Xuan hamlet, Nghia Xuan commune (Quy Hop) can never forget the terrifying moment he witnessed with his own eyes.
“I was preparing to pack the goods when I heard a deafening bang. Looking out, I saw two passenger vans completely crushed on the left side. From a distance, I could still see the people on the vans. On the other side, the truck was facing away from someone’s house. I stopped what I was doing and ran back, and what I saw was a horrifying scene. It was so painful!” - Mr. Thanh let out a sigh.

Scene of the accident between a passenger bus and a truck on the afternoon of March 31. |
The particularly serious accident that Mr. Thanh mentioned took the lives of 3 passengers on the fateful bus, departing from Vinh City to the mountainous district of Que Phong. There were about 10 passengers on the bus at that time, 3 of whom died on the spot, including a 3-month-old baby boy traveling with his parents.
The winding mountain road of nearly 10 kilometers long brought the delegation of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee to Huoi 3 village, Chau Hoi commune (Quy Chau) to burn incense for Vi Manh Hao (3 months old).
When we arrived, the house was cold and empty because the child's mother - Ms. Luong Thuy Anh, was so sad after the tragic death of her child that she could not bear the shock and had to be hospitalized. The child's father - Mr. Vi Van Quy is still in the hospital receiving emergency treatment after the accident.
Hao's grandfather painfully said: "Just the other day, the two of them called to say that my grandchild was too young, so the hospital told him to come back after 6 months for treatment. But... before he could get home, my grandchild passed away"!

Relatives cried next to Lo Thi Minh's coffin. |
Also killed on that fateful trip were Ms. Lo Thi Minh (born 1981) from Hoa Tien 2 village, Chau Tien commune (Quy Chau) and Ms. Pham Thi Hue (born 1971) from Kim Son town (Que Phong). Among them, Ms. Lo Thi Minh's family situation was extremely pitiful.
That fateful day, the accident happened at 4:30 pm but the family did not know until 10 pm and the body was not brought back to the village until 2 am the next day. Her family was so poor that they could not afford a coffin so the family had to hold the funeral at the house of Lo Van Giap - Lo Thi Minh's older brother.
Sitting absentmindedly next to her daughter's coffin, Vi Thi Lan's two hands tightly held onto the coffin and choked: "Minh, please come back to me, why are you lying in such a cold place?" Every now and then, she asked the neighbors to come over to see if her granddaughter had woken up. Lo Thi Minh was a single mother, she passed away when her only child was just 1 year old.

However, that was not the last accident, because only 30 minutes after the above incident, another particularly serious accident occurred in Nghia Xuan area. This accident was only about 1.5 km from the scene of the first accident and continued to take the lives of 3 people, including 2 people who were brothers and uncles. The remaining person was a neighbor.
Family tragedy
On the afternoon of April 1, we visited the family of Nguyen Duc Quang (born in 1989) in Khe Do hamlet, Nghia Xuan commune (Quy Hop). Quang was the first of three victims of the accident between a tractor trailer and a motorbike to be buried by his family.
In the small house, the atmosphere of mourning was all around. Every time a guest came to burn incense and pay their respects, only the son Nguyen Trong Minh (11 years old) stood up to bow in return. His wife could not bear it because the disaster struck so suddenly, while their daughter - Nguyen Tuyet Nhi (5 years old) was too young to know how to take care of her mother and help her brother.
The family of the victim Nguyen Duc Quang at that time only had a few close relatives, to both take care of the young wife and guide Minh how to return the thanks. Many other relatives of Mr. Quang had to go to the house of the victim Nguyen Trong Chinh (born 1984) to take him to his final resting place, because Mr. Nguyen Trong Chinh and Mr. Nguyen Duc Quang were cousins. Like Mr. Quang, Mr. Chinh passed away, leaving behind his young wife and two young children, the eldest child was 6 years old and the second child was only 15 months old, along with elderly parents who were at an "unprecedented" age.

Opposite the house of victim Nguyen Duc Quang is the family of victim Yen Van Tung (born in 1990). Relatives of Yen Van Tung cried beside the coffin of the unfortunate person. “Tung, why did you leave so soon? You were so young, your mother told me that she wanted you to get married and have grandchildren for her to hold. Do you know how heartbroken your mother is that you are leaving like this?”
The older sister's cries made everyone unable to hold back their tears. Nguyen Minh Hiep - Yen Van Tung's brother-in-law, who seemed to be the calmest person, recalled: "As soon as I received the news of my sister's accident, I thought I misheard because I knew there was an accident between a passenger bus and a truck. Who would have thought that when I ran to get there..."
