Severe cold, early season cold, and complex and unpredictable developments of plant pests are factors that are expected to greatly affect the growth and development of spring crops in 2025.

On the afternoon of November 6, Nghe An held a conference to deploy the 2025 Spring Crop Production Project. Comrades: Nguyen Van De - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Phung Thanh Vinh - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; Vo Thi Nhung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development co-chaired the conference.

Spring crop production in 2025 is forecasted to take place in conditions where cold air is likely to operate early; the period of severe cold coincides with the time of seedling emergence and sowing, which will affect production progress as well as potentially damage crops due to the weather.

In particular, in the Spring crop of 2025, facing global economic, political and climate instability, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) forecasts that rice prices will remain high in the coming crop year. Therefore, this is also the time for us to promote the production of quality rice to actively participate in the market and increase the production value of Nghe An rice.

Based on the forecasted advantages and disadvantages, Nghe An has developed a plan, arranged a reasonable crop structure, variety structure and season, suitable to the specific conditions of each region. The guiding spirit is to be flexible, decisive and mobilize the entire political system to focus on directing production; exploiting and promoting all resources to the maximum so that the 2025 Spring crop reaches the highest level in terms of area, productivity, output, ensuring safe and highly effective production.

With the target of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector striving for food output in 2025 of about 1,200,000 tons. Of which, the Winter crop 2024 output is estimated at 72,750 tons; the Summer-Autumn crop always faces many difficulties in water resources, late-season floods, pests and diseases, low productivity. Therefore, the Spring crop 2025 must strive to reach 708,800 tons of food.

Specifically: 90,500 hectares of rice are produced, with an output of 624,650 tons; 108,800 hectares of corn, with an output of 708,800 tons. In addition, there are other short-term crops such as peanuts, sweet potatoes, vegetables of all kinds, etc.

Speaking at the conference, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De stated: Spring crop production plays a very important role, deciding the completion of the year's plan targets.

If the biggest difficulty in Summer-Autumn production is the source of irrigation water and flooding at the end of the season, Spring production requires appropriate solutions to adapt to severe cold and early cold; pests such as golden apple snails, rice blast disease, grain smut, fall armyworms, cassava mosaic disease... will develop in a complex and unpredictable manner. These are factors that are predicted to greatly affect the growth and development of Spring crops, especially rice seedlings and other crops at the sowing stage.

Reviewing and drawing lessons from the 2024 Spring crop, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De pointed out 2 shortcomings that need to be noted to overcome in developing the Project and directing the production of the 2025 Spring crop, namely: The targets on area and output of peanuts, biomass corn and sweet potatoes did not meet the set plan. The productivity of rice areas planted 10-15 days ahead of the crop schedule decreased compared to areas planted close to and in line with the recommended crop schedule.

The 2025 Spring Crop Production Project has been developed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, identifying 6 advantages, 8 difficulties and 10 main groups of solutions for implementation. In order to organize the 2025 Spring Crop Production to achieve high results in terms of area, productivity, output, and minimize damage caused by natural disasters and epidemics, localities are required to synchronously implement the solutions proposed by the Department of Agriculture.

It is necessary to assign specific tasks so that the entire political system can participate in directing production. In addition to the central government's support policy and the province's regular support policy, it is recommended that the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns proactively allocate local budgets and make the most of all resources to support farmers in investing in production development, especially expanding effective models.
