Severe cold weather at the beginning of the season, along with the complex and unpredictable nature of plant pests and diseases, are factors that are predicted to have a significant impact on the growth and development of crops in the Spring 2025 season.

On the afternoon of November 6th, Nghe An province held a conference to implement the Spring 2025 crop production plan. The conference was co-chaired by Mr. Nguyen Van De - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Mr. Phung Thanh Vinh - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; and Ms. Vo Thi Nhung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Spring crop production in 2025 is predicted to take place under conditions where cold weather is likely to arrive early; the period of severe cold and frost will coincide with the time for seedling preparation and planting, thus affecting production progress and posing a potential risk of crop damage due to weather.

In particular, for the Spring 2025 crop season, in the face of global economic, political, and climate instability, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization... The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts that rice prices will remain high in the next crop year. Therefore, this is also the time for us to promote the production of high-quality rice in order to actively participate in the market and increase the production value of Nghe An rice.

Based on the anticipated advantages and disadvantages, Nghe An province has developed a plan to arrange a rational crop structure, seed structure, and planting season, suitable to the specific conditions of each region. The guiding principle is flexibility, decisiveness, and the mobilization of the entire political system to focus on directing production; maximizing and developing all resources to ensure that the Spring 2025 crop achieves the highest possible area, yield, and output, while ensuring safe and highly efficient production.

With the agricultural sector's target for food production in 2025 being approximately 1,200,000 tons, the estimated production for the 2024 winter crop is 72,750 tons. The summer-autumn crop faces numerous challenges related to water resources, late-season flooding, pests and diseases, and low yields. Therefore, the spring crop of 2025 must strive to achieve 708,800 tons of food.

Specifically: Rice production reached 90,500 hectares, yielding 624,650 tons; corn production reached 108,800 hectares, yielding 708,800 tons. In addition, other short-term crops such as peanuts, sweet potatoes, and various vegetables were also grown.

Speaking at the conference, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De stated clearly: Spring crop production plays a very important role and is decisive in achieving the year's plan targets.

While the biggest challenges in summer-autumn crop production are irrigation water and late-season flooding, spring crop production requires appropriate solutions to adapt to severe cold spells at the beginning of the season; plant pests such as golden apple snails, blast disease, grain discoloration, fall armyworm, cassava mosaic disease, etc., will develop in a complex and unpredictable manner. These are factors that will greatly affect the growth and development of spring crops, especially rice seedlings and other crops during the planting stage.

Reflecting on and drawing lessons from the Spring crop of 2024, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De pointed out two shortcomings that need to be addressed in the development of the plan and guidance for the Spring crop of 2025: Firstly, the targets for area and yield of peanuts, biomass corn, and sweet potatoes were not met compared to the set plan. Secondly, the yield of rice planted 10-15 days before the scheduled planting season was lower than that of rice planted close to and according to the recommended schedule.

The plan for the 2025 Spring crop production, developed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, identifies six advantages, eight difficulties, and ten main groups of solutions for implementation. To ensure successful implementation of the 2025 Spring crop production in terms of area, yield, and output, while minimizing damage caused by natural disasters and diseases, localities are required to implement all the solutions outlined by the agricultural sector in a coordinated manner.

Specific tasks need to be assigned so that the entire political system is involved in directing production. In addition to central government support policies and regular provincial support policies, it is requested that the People's Committees of districts, cities, and towns proactively allocate local budgets and maximize all available resources to support farmers in investing in production development, especially in expanding effective models.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De gave the directive.
