Explaining this, Dr. Ata Jami of the University of Central Florida said that we often do not feel comfortable when we see ourselves eating unhealthy food.
“Looking in the mirror is not just about how we look,” says Jami. “It helps us see ourselves objectively and promotes self-evaluation, just like when we look at others.”
To reach this conclusion, scientists conducted an experiment on 185 students. The candidates were asked to choose chocolate cake and fruit salad, then rate their taste when eaten in two rooms: with and without mirrors.
Students who ate chocolate cake said it tasted “less delicious” in the mirrored room. Meanwhile, the mirror had no effect on the taste of the fruit salad.

Scientists found that looking in the mirror prompted candidates to compare their own behavior with social standards.
If the behavior is not “up to standard,” they will feel uncomfortable looking in the mirror. And in the case of forced mirror viewing, they will feel uncomfortable, and eventually the food will taste less delicious.
The study was published in the journal of the Association for Consumer Research (USA).
