Upland rice is the most important food of the Thai, Mong, and Kho Mu people in districts such as Tuong Duong, Ky Son, etc. - mountainous areas with steep slopes, making it difficult to cultivate rice. From the 3rd and 4th lunar months, people start clearing the fields, and sowing rice in the 5th and 6th lunar months. The upland rice harvest season takes place in the 9th and 10th lunar months. This is considered the happiest time of the year and is also quite tiring. People have to go to the fields early in the morning. Sometimes they have to sleep on the fields to harvest the rice. Upland rice is also quite erratic, with some years yielding and some losing. This year, rats caused a number of farmers in Nhon Mai commune, Tuong Duong district to lose everything. In addition, the increasingly poor soil is also the reason for the decline in upland rice productivity. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

The tool used to cut upland rice is a small sickle-like knife attached to a wooden handle. With this tool, people can only pick individual ears. Most people still thresh rice in the fields and then carry it back to the village or leave it in the warehouses built next to the fields or houses. Photo: Huu Vi

In Tuong Duong district, Mai Son and Nhon Mai communes... still have a lot of upland rice fields. Some villages do not have rice fields, and the food source of the people depends entirely on upland rice fields. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

Although quite precarious, for hundreds of years, upland farming has become a custom of many highland villages and has gradually become a unique cultural feature. Many experiences in upland rice cultivation have been summarized in folk songs and proverbs of indigenous people. However, the way of upland rice cultivation has not changed much for hundreds of years. People still have to clear forests to get land for production, and drill holes to sow seeds with a tool that resembles a sharp knife but has a long handle. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

In recent times, the area of upland rice cultivation has decreased because today's young generation no longer likes to cultivate the fields. They mainly seek other occupations with better income. However, it may take a long time to eliminate the practice of upland rice cultivation because this is still the main source of food for people in many communes and villages in the mountainous areas of Nghe An.
