Anh Son farmers start harvesting sesame |
Implementing the conversion of drought-resistant crop structure to increase profits and improve rice land, farmers in Tuong Son commune boldly focused on intercropping "2 rice crops, 1 color crop". Among them, sesame is favored by farmers because of its short harvest time, high yield, and stable price.
Ms. Thai Thi Hang in Hamlet 5, Tuong Son Commune, this winter-spring crop, planted 4 sao of black sesame, and said: The price of sesame is quite high, the output is easy, making farmers very excited. With more than 10 years of experience and applying techniques, 1 sao of sesame that Ms. Hang cultivates usually yields 40-50 kg of sesame seeds. With a price of 50,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, her family's 4 sao of sesame still has a profit of over 8 million VND.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy - Vice Chairman of Tuong Son Commune People's Committee said: Sesame price is more stable than rice, usually at 40 - 42,000 VND/kg, sometimes up to 50,000 VND/kg. The whole Tuong Son commune has about 5 hectares of sesame growing area. Applying the model of intercropping rice with sesame not only helps increase profits but also reduces costs in the next rice crop because sesame stems and roots leave nutrients so they are very light on fertilizers, pesticides... In particular, this is a type of plant that does not tolerate much rain or water, so it is very suitable for converting to drought-resistant crops.

Sesame is suitable for highland rice fields in Anh Son. |
According to people in Anh Son district, sesame has a short growing period, about 75 days before harvest. In particular, this is a type of plant that does not tolerate much rain or water, so it is necessary to prepare the soil carefully and ensure drainage when there is too much water or when there is irregular rain. The characteristic of sesame is that it is not "picky" about soil, so farmers only need to know how to care for it and choose the right time to sow in the right weather for the sesame plant to grow and develop well.
Currently, some winter-spring sesame areas of farmers in Tuong Son commune are about to be harvested. After the harvest, farmers will continue to plant sesame or corn on the newly cultivated land.
Anh Son currently has over 60 hectares of highland converted by local people to grow sesame, mainly in Tho Son, Binh Son, Thanh Son, and Tuong Son communes. The average yield per crop in the district is 43 tons. In the complicated weather conditions and severe drought, sesame is the choice to help people produce safely and effectively.
