WannaCry causes a Honda factory to shut down

Honda Motor Co. said a domestic car plant had to halt production for a day this week after discovering the WannaCry malware on its computer network.

Specifically, on Monday (June 19), the automaker had to stop production at the Sayama plant, northwest of Tokyo, which is responsible for producing many models, including the Accord MPV, Odyssey Minivan and Step Wagon compact MPV with a daily output of about 1,000 vehicles.

Honda discovered that the virus had affected its network systems across Japan, North America, Europe, China and other regions, a company spokesman said, despite efforts to protect its systems since mid-May when the virus caused widespread disruptions at factories, hospitals and stores around the world.

Production at other plants has not been affected, and regular operations at the Sayama plant resumed on Tuesday (June 20), the spokesman said.

The spread of WannaCry has slowed since last month, but security experts warn that new versions of the ransomware could still cause attacks.

Rival automakers Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co were also hit by the virus last month, and the alliance companies have suspended production at plants in Japan, Britain, France, Romania and India.
