Sputnik reported that the Washington Post quoted top US officials as saying that negotiations between the US and Russia on restoring the ceasefire agreement in southern Syria "have largely broken down" due to the stance of Mr. John Bolton, President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor, on withdrawing US troops.

The newspaper wrote: "Negotiations with Russia on restoring the ceasefire agreement, which discussed the issue of joint US-Iranian troop withdrawal, broke down... when Mr. Bolton decided that US troops would not leave until all Iranian forces had left Syria."

The Washington Post also noted the Russian-US talks in the context of the developing situation around the Golan Heights.

According to this newspaper, last year Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the Golan Heights issue with Donald Trump right after the White House owner announced the move of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

However, discussions on this situation "did not get off the ground" until Mr. Bolton took over as the US President's national security adviser last spring./.
