In this match, Stan Wawrinka played poorly and made many mistakes, allowing Medvedev to easily win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 after more than 3 hours of play. This was Medvedev's first victory at a Grand Slam tournament and the Russian player celebrated by kissing the ground, as if he had just won the championship.
Speaking after the match, Medvedev said: “When the score was 5-1 (set 4), I started thinking about what I would do after the match. I kissed the grass because it was my first victory at the Grand Slam tournaments. I was really happy. Wimbledon is my favorite Grand Slam.”

Meanwhile, Wawrinka admitted that he did not play well because he has not fully recovered from a knee injury. “I have had problems with my knee since Queen. Although it is not a serious injury, it has affected my performance a lot. In addition, the grass court is not suitable for me. I will find a solution and come back next year.”
With this defeat, Wawrinka still cannot complete 4 Grand Slam titles in his career. Previously, the Swiss tennis player had won the Australian Open (2014), French Open (2015) and US Open (2016).
Apart from Wawrinka's defeat, there were no more surprises as strong players such as Andy Murray (seed number 1), Rafael Nadal (4), Marin Cilic (7), Kei Nishikori (9), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (13)... in the men's singles and Simona Halep (2), Elina Svitolina (4), Johanna Konta (5), Venus Williams (10)... in the women's singles easily overcame their opponents to advance to the second round of Wimbledon 2017.
