Wenger: 'Signing Cech was a difficult decision'
Arsenal manager reveals he had doubts about Petr Cech's fitness, as well as David Ospina's chances.
Cech joined Arsenal last summer for $14.27 million after 11 successful years at Stamford Bridge. The Czech goalkeeper has been instrumental in helping Arsenal reach the top of the table and is considered one of the most valuable signings in the Premier League this season.
However, Arsene Wenger revealed that he had difficulty and was very hesitant in buying Cech because the French strategist also trusted Arsenal's goalkeeper last season - David Ospina.
"Look, it was a very, very difficult decision for me because I rate Ospina highly. I have high praise for him. For me, Ospina is one of the most underrated goalkeepers, especially in England," Wenger said.

“People say signing Cech is a rare opportunity. Yes, absolutely. I would add that if I didn’t do it, it would be a mistake. I think so,” the Arsenal boss continued.
Since arriving at the Emirates, Cech has kept a record 172 clean sheets in the Premier League. Arsenal's defence has also benefited from having an experienced goalkeeper behind them.
Wenger admitted he had doubts about Cech's fitness after a season without regular playing time as he was back-up to Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea. The goalkeeper is also 33 years old.
"I don't know what his physical condition is because he hasn't played. When I met him, I was immediately sure about his desire to assert himself, about his mentality. However, I don't know how much he can contribute physically," said Wenger.
Tonight, January 24 (Hanoi time), Petr Cech will meet his old team Chelsea with the determination to help Arsenal regain the top spot.
