60GHz Wi-Fi is lightning fast.
On October 12th, Samsung announced that it has developed a new wireless connectivity technology called 60GHz Wi-Fi, capable of transferring a 1GB movie in just 3 seconds.

Kim Chang Yong, head of a Samsung R&D center, said this Wi-Fi technology will open up real-world opportunities for downloading uncompressed HD videos in real time. He even stated that the actual speed of 60GHz Wi-Fi is 10 times faster than currently used Wi-Fi technologies.
The 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard is currently the fastest, using the 5GHz frequency band.
In fact, 60GHz Wi-Fi technology has been discussed by researchers for a long time. In mid-2011, BridgeWave Communications (USA) presented the concepts and specifications of this new technology.
It not only brings Gigabit network connectivity standards from cable to Wi-Fi but also has the potential to achieve speeds of several Gigabits per second. The infrastructure deployment costs are low, and it's well-suited to densely populated urban areas as its BTS (Base Transceiver Station) relay stations are tiny and can be mounted on top of lampposts.
According to Bloomberg (October 12), Samsung has now announced that it has overcome the hurdles to commercializing 60GHz Wi-Fi technology. The South Korean electronics giant said that it will soon release new generation devices supporting this ultra-fast Wi-Fi technology in early 2015.
