The WTO will have a new Director-General.
Brazilian diplomat Carvalho de Azevedo has been elected as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The Brazilian government confirmed on May 7th that its diplomat, Carvalho de Azevedo, has been elected as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The World Trade Organization is expected to announce the official results of the vote for Director-General on May 8th. However, sources from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Azevedo won with 93 votes, more than the 80 needed.

Mr. Azevedo, 55 years old, has 40 years of experience in Brazilian diplomacy and has been Brazil's Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization since 2008.
As the first Latin American elected to the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Azevedo enjoyed strong support from the BRICS group of emerging economies, the Portuguese-speaking community, Latin American countries, as well as many Asian and African nations.
Mr. Azevedo will officially take office on August 31st, for a four-year term, replacing Mr. Pascal Lamy, who has served two terms as Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
