Speaking to reporters, San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said "a suspect was found dead inside the building with a self-inflicted wound" and "at this time, we believe this is the shooter."
Police arrived at the scene at 12:48 p.m. local time and found a chaotic scene with people running from the scene, Barberini said. They initially found an injured victim lying in front of the building. Minutes later, they found a woman who appeared to have committed suicide inside the building. The other two victims were found nearby.
Images broadcast on local television showed scores of YouTube employees leaving the headquarters with their hands raised above their heads.
Police have sealed off the building to investigate and search for the remaining victims. SWAT teams and police helicopters have also been mobilized to the scene.
The White House said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident and that the federal government is closely monitoring the situation in San Bruno. On his personal Twitter page, President Trump expressed his condolences to the victims and thanked law enforcement agencies on the scene.
YouTube was founded in February 2005, and quickly became a popular video-sharing website around the world. In 2006, Google announced that it was pursuing a $1.65 billion acquisition of YouTube.
More than 1,100 employees work at YouTube's San Bruno headquarters, located about 12 miles south of San Francisco. The headquarters is about 31 miles from Google's headquarters.
