At least one woman was killed and six people were in critical condition when a man opened fire at a poolside birthday party at an apartment complex in San Diego, California, US.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and shot dead the gunman. The suspect was identified as Peter Selis, 49, a resident of the area. The motive for the attack is still unknown.

The incident occurred at 6:10 p.m. (local time) on April 30 at the La Jolla Crossroad apartment complex in La Jolla, California. A white man wearing brown shorts suddenly opened fire on people at the swimming pool.
According to witnesses, he held a beer bottle in one hand and a gun in the other and shot at people.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said eight people were taken to hospitals.
“Eight people were taken to the hospital, four of whom were African-American women, three were African-American men, one was a Hispanic man,” Zimmerman said.
One woman died in hospital and six people were in critical condition, he added.
