Shooting at church in Canada, 6 people killed
A group of attackers opened fire at a church in Quebec City, Canada, during evening prayers, killing six people.
Witnesses said up to three attackers opened fire on about 40 people inside the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, on the evening of January 29, Reuters reported. Police have set up a security perimeter around the mosque.
Quebec police confirmed the shooting on Twitter, saying six people were killed and eight injured. Police are investigating the incident as a “terrorist act.” Two suspects have been arrested.
“Why did this happen here? It’s terrible,” said Mohamed Yangui, the head of the mosque. Yangui, who was not at the mosque when the incident happened, said he received many calls from worshippers.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard called the attack “barbaric violence” and offered his condolences to the victims’ families. Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale expressed his deep sorrow at the loss of life on Twitter.
