The image of the cars being dumped into the sea at a location just 3 km from the city of Sidon attracted many onlookers. FCS said the initiative was aimed at creating an “underwater park” and that the Lebanese army had provided the old cars.

Lebanon has a 200 km long coastline on the Mediterranean but has struggled to deal with the problem of garbage pollution on its beaches. In Sidon, a huge garbage dump blocks an area next to the beach, even though the city has just inaugurated a new waste treatment facility.
