At noon on April 28 (Italian time), a mass shooting occurred targeting the Italian Presidential Palace in Rome.

Several people may have been injured, including two security guards. One person was seriously injured.

Shortly afterward, the perpetrator of the shooting was apprehended by Italian security forces. Police are currently investigating the motive. Italian police and security officials stated that the gunman, dressed in a smart suit and tie, was identified as Luigi Preiti, an Italian national. He was also injured.

Earlier, a coalition government between the People's Freedom Party (PDL) of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the center-left Democratic Party (PD) of newly appointed Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta had formed a new coalition government. This was a positive move ending the political deadlock that had lasted for nearly two months in Italy in forming a new government after the general election.
