According to the indictment, while serving a prison sentence for fraud, Nguyen Duc Trung met a man named Lo (whose identity and background are unknown). After his release from prison, the two maintained contact.
On August 18, 2024, through a conversation, Trung learned that a former cellmate had drugs, so he asked to buy 3 packets of methamphetamine and was quoted a price of 9 million VND.
At the roadside sugarcane juice stall, following Lơ's instructions, Trung put the money into a cigarette pack and left it on the table, then went to receive the "goods".
The following evening, Trung took the drugs and boarded a bus to Vinh City, hiding them in two different locations with the intention of selling them for profit.
On the morning of August 26, 2024, Trung invited his friend Ngo Thi D. to his house to use drugs. Trung ordered 4 ecstasy pills and 2 million VND worth of Ketamine online for 3.6 million VND.
Then, Trung poured the drugs onto a ceramic plate, rubbed and ground the Ketamine into a fine powder using a plastic card (called "stir-frying the ketamine"). After "stir-frying the ketamine," Trung rolled a banknote into a tube and shared it with D. for use.
While both were using drugs, they were caught red-handed by the Criminal Investigation Agency of Vinh City Police. During a search of Trung's convenience store in an apartment building in Vinh City, the police discovered packages of drugs that had been hidden there previously.
In this case, Nguyen Duc Trung is criminally liable for the act of buying and selling nearly 54 grams of drugs and organizing for one person to illegally use drugs.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to his crime. He confessed to trafficking drugs for profit, even though he knew this act was strictly prohibited by law.
The defendant admitted to being addicted to drugs for many years and therefore encouraged others to use drugs.
Regarding the woman who used drugs with the defendant, since she did not participate in the discussion, agreement, preparation of tools and location for organizing the drug use, she will not be prosecuted criminally, but only receive an administrative penalty.
After a comprehensive review of the case, the panel of judges sentenced Nguyen Duc Trung to 15 years in prison for illegally trading narcotics and 2 years in prison for organizing the illegal use of narcotics by others; the total sentence the defendant must serve is 17 years in prison.
