Building a "mansion", buying a billion-dollar car thanks to raising pigs in a cold pen
Mr. Vu and Mr. Trung are the most effective pig farmers in Le Thuy district (Quang Binh province). They have invested in a closed farm in a cold barn for more than 3 years. Thanks to this method of raising pigs, they have been able to build spacious houses and buy billion-dollar cars!
Mr. Nguyen Van Vuong, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Le Thuy district (Quang Binh province) proudly shared.
One day at the end of the year, Mr. Nguyen Van Vuong took me to visit the closed pig farm of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vu and Mr. Nguyen Van Trung in Le Xa village, Mai Thuy commune, Le Thuy district. That farm is located in the middle of a cajuput forest far from the residential area, with an area of 1.2 hectares.

Mr. Vu said: Previously, he was a farmer specializing in rice and forest planting. But after the big storm in 2013, his family's more than 2 hectares of acacia plantation were almost completely lost. The rice grown was only enough to eat, not much left over. Trung, who used to be a construction engineer, worked for construction companies everywhere, but life still faced many difficulties.
Struggling to change his business direction, after researching everywhere, in 2015, Mr. Vu discussed with his younger brother, Mr. Trung, to contribute capital to open a livestock farm. In February 2015, the closed barn with a cooling system had an area of 1,600m2The construction of the two brothers' house began in February 2016 and was completed at a cost of 1.2 billion VND.
According to the design, the pig pen has a capacity of 1,200 pigs. Each year, the farm only raises 2 crops, each crop lasts about 5 months, then does a general cleaning and leaves the pen empty for about 1 month to ensure safe isolation. Mr. Vu said: “Our pig farming criteria are to ensure disease safety and not pollute the environment. Therefore, we raise pigs according to VietGAP standards, building cold pens according to a closed process.
Currently, the pig barn has a cooling system, the temperature in the barn fluctuates at 27 - 300C. In addition, to ensure the environment, we also invested 200 million VND to build a biogas system, the manure is filtered through a rough pit, then the air suction machine through the filter tank can be used to meet the electricity needs of the farm, and the fresh manure pit will be composted with leaves to decompose...
Thanks to that, even though the farm is large in number, there is almost no foul smell when entering the farm premises. The criteria for breeding pigs must be at least 5 weeks old, fully vaccinated and have a veterinary quarantine certificate before entering the barn.
During the farming process, they ensure complete disinfection of people entering and leaving the farm with an automatic disinfection system right at the gate. There are always 3 technical staff in charge of feed, veterinary and livestock farming living on site to support them throughout the farming season.
Normally, pigs sold in whole pens will be purchased by businesses in Da Nang. With the current price of 42,000 VND/kg of live pigs, the farm earns a profit of over 1.2 billion VND/2 crops per year.
To achieve the success they have today, Nguyen Xuan Vu and Nguyen Van Trung have gone through many difficulties and challenges. That was when they finished building the barn and ran out of capital to buy piglets and feed. To solve this problem, the two men borrowed 4 land use right certificates from their neighbors and 2 land use right certificates from their family to borrow from the bank. At the end of 2016, a major flood killed 350 pigs in the farm.
In early 2017, the price of pigs dropped dramatically, causing farmers everywhere to suffer. Mr. Vu recalled: “During the most difficult times, we received attention and support from the district leaders, both materially and spiritually.
Of these, the district supported us with 60 million VND twice and called on businesses and slaughterhouses in the province to come forward and consume the products. Thanks to raising pigs, Mr. Vu and Mr. Trung were able to build 2 new spacious houses with 2.4 billion VND and buy a new car worth nearly 1.1 billion VND.

Mr. Trung shared: “Developing chain-based livestock farming will help the farm be more proactive in consuming products”. Currently, the provincial Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Center is supporting the farm to implement a model of raising and consuming clean pigs in a chain.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Le Thuy district also supported the construction of a slaughterhouse to help the farm complete this closed process. It is expected that by early 2019, the slaughterhouse will be completed and put into use.
At that time, the farm will release clean pork products to the market. In addition, Mr. Vu is also researching and learning about dry manure presses to take advantage of composted manure to supply agricultural production households in the area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Vuong said: “Closed pig farming in cold barns is a new direction in livestock development today. Although the initial investment capital is large, in the long term, the model brings many outstanding benefits compared to open barn farming. Not only does it bring high economic efficiency, this model also contributes to changing the small-scale, fragmented farming habits of farmers to the form of concentrated, closed farms, sustainable farming”. |
