Building modern agriculture, adapting to climate change
(Baonghean.vn) - "The Agriculture and Rural Development sector must implement solutions to build a modern agriculture, integrate internationally, and adapt to climate change" - that is the direction of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the Conference to summarize activities in 2019 and deploy tasks in 2020 of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector.
On the afternoon of December 23, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a national online conference to review the implementation of the 2019 Agricultural and Rural Development Plan and deploy tasks for 2020. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong co-chaired the conference.

Completed and exceeded many important targets
In 2019, the Agriculture and Rural Development sector continued to effectively implement the project and plan to restructure the sector comprehensively, synchronously, with focus and key points, operating according to market mechanisms, applying new science and technology, creating added value and innovating the growth model; the investment environment was improved, the national competitiveness of agricultural products had many positive changes. Completed and exceeded 3/4 targets including: Agricultural, forestry and fishery export turnover estimated at 41.3 billion USD; Trade surplus reached a high of 10.4 billion USD, up 19.3%; Forest coverage rate reached 41.85%; The rate of communes meeting new rural criteria was 54%, with 111 district-level units meeting the standards/completing the task of building new rural areas.
In Nghe An, in 2019, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development exceeded the assigned plan targets, contributing significantly to promoting growth and successfully implementing the province's tasks and plans, ensuring social security and improving the lives of rural residents. The estimated growth rate of GTSX reached 4.97/plan 4.3 - 4.5%; the number of communes meeting NTM standards was over 40/plan 27 communes, 4 district-level units met NTM standards, forest coverage rate reached 58%...

In 2020, the Vietnamese Agriculture and Rural Development sector strives for a GDP growth rate of 2.8 - 3%; export turnover of over 42 billion USD; forest coverage of 42%; the rate of communes meeting NTM standards of 59%, at least 121 districts meeting NTM criteria; the rate of rural population using clean water of 96%; the establishment of 2,000 new agricultural cooperatives...

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc commended and highly appreciated the outstanding achievements of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector in 2019. At the same time, he emphasized: 2020 is an important and breakthrough year to complete the 5-year plan 2016 - 2020, therefore, the whole sector needs to focus on restructuring agriculture associated with growth innovation and building new rural areas.

Deploying solutions to build modern agriculture, international integration, climate change adaptation, increasing added value and sustainable development, associated with building civilized and prosperous new rural areas.
There are solutions to exploit and make good use of the advantages of tropical agriculture, develop specialized production areas towards high-quality, large-scale goods, meeting food safety standards. Connect agricultural production with processing and preservation industry and markets, export with global value chains to create stable markets and increase the value of agricultural products.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also requested localities and the agricultural sector to organize close links between localities in each region, create breakthroughs for rapid and sustainable development, improve efficiency and competitiveness of agricultural products. Proactively and actively integrate internationally, promote the application of science and technology. Along with that, focus on developing rural infrastructure, strengthening resource management as well as proactively preventing natural disasters and responding to climate change.
