According to the decision, this will be a modern, synchronous system to provide data and information on the current status of the quality of the Central region's marine environment (ambient air, seawater and sediments), and at the same time, promptly warn when the quality of the Central region's marine environment shows signs of pollution.
The project is divided into five components, four of which aim to enhance the capacity of the marine environmental monitoring and warning system of the four above-mentioned provinces.
One of the contents of the component in Ha Tinh province is to build an environmental monitoring and warning station in Vung Ang Economic Zone and surrounding areas. The monitoring station is built adjacent to the campus of Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation and has been approved by the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province to grant land.
The fifth component of the project is to build an environmental warning monitoring system along the coast of four central provinces through a system of automatic monitoring stations, remote sensing technology and periodic monitoring. This component is managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
The project has a total estimated cost of 320 billion VND, to be implemented in the period 2017 - 2019.
In early April 2016, the mass fish deaths originated from a number of fish cages near the Vung Ang Industrial Zone (Ha Tinh), then spread to Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien - Hue. More than two months later, Formosa Ha Tinh admitted to being the direct cause of the marine environmental incident, pledging to pay 500 million USD in compensation. |
