Watch Vietnam's coastal defense missiles deployed in combat
Brigade 681, Naval Region 2, has just organized a combat deployment exercise with Bastion-P - the world's leading coastal defense missile system today.
As part of the Navy's combat formation, the 681st Coastal Missile Brigade, under Naval Region 2, is equipped with many modern weapons and equipment, including Bastion-P complexes manufactured in Russia. Known as one of the most modern shore-to-sea weapons in the world, the Bastion-P missile complex's weapons are Yakhont supersonic anti-ship missiles. The Bastion-P's design allows it to destroy enemy surface forces in all weather conditions, including in environments with strong electronic interference. The Yakhont missile weighs about 3 tons, is 8.9 meters long, and has a body diameter of 0.7 meters. The missile is designed with 4 large guiding fins near the tail, and at the nose is an air intake for the engine to operate. Yakhont is equipped with a supersonic scramjet engine that allows it to reach speeds more than twice the speed of sound. With such an extremely high speed, it is very difficult for the enemy to react and intercept. The Yakhont missile is equipped with a fragmentation warhead weighing nearly 300kg. According to world experts, the Yakhont is capable of destroying large warships with just a single shot. Regarding the guidance system, after leaving the launcher, the Yakhont missile will fly according to the pre-programmed inertial guidance mode. During the target approach phase, the active radar homing head (on the missile) will activate to search and detect the target at a distance of 75km. In particular, at this stage, the missile lowers its altitude and flies close to the sea surface from 5-15m. This is also a factor that enhances the missile's survivability against air defense systems on enemy warships. The range of the Yakhont missile depends on the flight mode: mixed high-low trajectory flight allows a range of 300km; low-low trajectory flight achieves a range of 120km. The Yakhont missile is designed for wide integration on many platforms (surface ships, submarines, aircraft, ground platforms). Currently, Yakhont is mainly equipped on the Bastion-P land-based coastal defense system. One Bastion-P system can protect a 600km long coastline. According to Russian news, in 2011 Vietnam received 2 battalions of Bastion-P sea defense systems from Russia. The basic equipment of the Bastion-P system includes: 4 K340P self-propelled launchers (each carrying 2 Yakhont missiles); reserve ammunition carriers; Monolit-B fire control radar system; command vehicles and logistics and technical support vehicles. |
